4D Odds Explained: What Are Your Real Chances of Winning?

· 6 min read

4D is simple maths: there are 10,000 possible numbers and each draw picks 23 of them. Knowing the real odds won't change your luck, but it does help you decide how much the game is worth to you.

Chances in a single draw

Your number…ChanceRoughly
takes 1st prize1 in 10,0000.01%
takes 1st, 2nd or 3rd (Small wins)3 in 10,0001 in 3,333
is any of the 23 numbers (Big wins)23 in 10,0001 in 435
For one specific number, one operator, one draw. Every number has the same chance.

Playing every draw for a year

One operator holds about 156 regular draws a year (three a week). If you played the same number with RM1 Big at every one:

  • You'd stake RM156.
  • Your chance of winning anything during the year is about 30%, almost always a Special or Consolation prize.
  • Your chance of 1st prize during the year is about 1.5%. On average it takes around 64 years of playing every draw to hit 1st prize once.
  • On average you'd get back about RM100, an expected loss of about RM56.

The average return: about 64 sen per ringgit

If you bought RM1 Big on all 10,000 numbers (RM10,000), you'd be guaranteed to hold all 23 winners and collect RM2,500 + RM1,000 + RM500 + 10 × RM180 + 10 × RM60 = RM6,400. That's a return of 64%. Small works out at 65%. The remaining 35–36% pays for operations, taxes, and the operator's profit.

This “return to player” is the same whether you play Big or Small, straight, Box or iBox. Different bet types change how you win, not how much you get back on average. See Big vs Small and Box vs iBox.

Can anything improve the odds?

No. Each draw is independent, and every number has the same 1 in 10,000 chance of 1st prize every time. Past results, “hot” and “cold” numbers, dream numbers and generators are fun ways to choose, but none of them change the odds. We explain why in hot and cold numbers.

Buying more numbers raises your chance of a win, but your cost rises at the same rate, so your average return stays at about 64 sen per ringgit.
