4D Big vs Small: Which Should You Play?

· 5 min read

Every 4D ticket asks the same question: Big or Small? Both use the same number and the same draw. The difference is which prizes you can win and how much they pay.

Big: more chances, smaller prizes

Because Big pays on all 23 winning numbers, it wins about 7.7 times as often as Small. Most wins are Special (RM180) or Consolation (RM60), which is why regular players often say Big “keeps you in the game”.

Small: fewer chances, bigger top prizes

Small only pays if your number is 1st, 2nd or 3rd, but those prizes are 40% to 100% higher than Big. It suits people who only care about the top prizes, and it's the more all-or-nothing choice.

Which returns more on average?

Almost exactly the same. Over 10,000 equally likely numbers, RM1 on each would return:

  • Big: 2,500 + 1,000 + 500 + 10×180 + 10×60 = RM6,400, or 64 sen per ringgit.
  • Small: 3,500 + 2,000 + 1,000 = RM6,500, or 65 sen per ringgit.

So neither bet is “better value”. The choice is about how often you'd like to win something versus how much the top prizes pay.

Playing both

Many tickets carry RM1 Big and RM1 Small on the same number (RM2 in total). If that number takes 1st prize, you win RM2,500 + RM3,500 = RM6,000. If it comes up as a Special number, only the Big part pays: RM180.
