Won 4D? How to Claim Your Prize in Malaysia

· 5 min read

Your number came up. Before celebrating, take a minute to confirm the win and protect your ticket. Here's what to do, step by step. Procedures differ slightly between operators, so always follow the instructions on your ticket and the operator's official website.

1. Double-check the win

  • Match the operator, draw date and draw number on your ticket with the result.
  • Check that you have the right bet type: Small only wins on 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize.
  • For Box or iBox, check every ordering of your digits. The number checker's “any order” option helps.
  • Work out the amount with the prize calculator.
  • Confirm against the operator's official results. They are the final word.

2. Protect the ticket

The ticket is your only proof of purchase, and whoever holds it can usually claim it. Keep it somewhere safe, flat and dry. Don't fold, tear, write over or laminate it: a damaged or unreadable ticket may be refused. Taking a photo of both sides is a sensible backup, but the photo itself can't be claimed.

3. Where to claim

  • Smaller prizes can usually be claimed at the operator's outlets, often the one where you bought the ticket.
  • Larger prizes are paid at the operator's branch or head office, often by cheque or bank transfer. The outlet will tell you if your win is above their limit.

4. What to bring

  • The original winning ticket.
  • Your MyKad or passport. Large prizes require identification.
  • Your bank details, if the prize will be paid by transfer.

5. Don't miss the deadline

Every operator has a claim period after the draw. Unclaimed prizes are forfeited when it ends. The period is stated on the ticket or in the operator's terms. Check it and claim early rather than late.

Is 4D prize money taxed?

In Malaysia, lottery winnings of individual players are generally not treated as taxable income. For a large win, it's still worth speaking to a tax adviser about what to do with the money.
